This time our New Year gathering will not be preceded by a financial market outlook.
In commemoration of the 150 year anniversary of the signing of the Friendship Treaty between Switzerland and Japan, Dr Dieter Schwarz, Director of the Kunstmuseum Winterthur, will elaborate on ,Japonismeʻ referring to some outstanding paintings of the collection of the museum.
The term ,Japonismeʻ was created at about the time when Japan opened up to foreign interests e.g. roughly when the treaty was signed. ,Japonismeʻ relates to the importance of a movement which begun to shake the foundations of European art and artistic taste. It opened up entirely new prospects for the creation of a new visual reality, a modern style; it defines the impact of Japanese aestetics on Western art.
A buffet with Japanese delicacies will be offered in the premises of the museum following the presentation.
