Tange Kenzō and Le Corbusier, between inspiration and convergence.
Tange Kenzō (1913-2005) is considered Japan’s greatest twentieth-century architect. He designed several buildings that have marked the history of modern Japanese architecture, such as the Yoyogi Gymnasium for the 1964 Olympic Games. More fundamentally, his career follows Japan’s post-war period, from the defeat of 1945 to the bursting of the real estate bubble. At the origin of his vocation, his link with Le Corbusier has never been severed, and has evolved throughout his impressive career. Three landmark projects will be analyzed to bear witness to this fluctuating and complex relationship between two monuments of 20th-century global architecture.
